Thanks to those who have responded to my query, namely Matt and Jean-Pierre. I guessed someone would know the answer :-)

320 BBS's for the whole world is quite a small figure, but as Matt says thre are several PMS's for every BBS (potentially).

If every sysop sends just one bulletin per year, we'd have a new bulletin almost every day! :-)

I was surprised how many BBS's there are in Canada and Germany, compared to the UK,
which used to have around 300 BBS's all by itself.

Both respondents made a number of interesting points, but I can't think of
a specific example at this time, so I'll shut up...
