You can use the MSGTYPES Option in a forwarding script to limit the type and
size of message to send in a forwarding session. If the other end is running
BPQ the options will be sent to the other end when you request reverse
forwarding.
You'd need to arrange for the remote sysop to set similar limits for when he
initiates forwarding to you.
The MSGTYPES option can be used in conjunction with timebands to set
different limits at different times of day.

Message size is, or should be directly related to the reliability of your HF
links. Good links will handle 20k just fine, but in many cases 10k is a more
realistic figure.
This is best determined by trial and error. If you see larger messages
taking too much time to move over your connection, then reduce message size.
Good BBS software will let you set a separate message size for each
forwarder, as some links are going to be more reliable than others, and you
do not want all forwarding to be limited by your least reliable link. A nice
feature for optimizing HF forwarding would be to vary message size and block
size by callsign, and also by time of day.

Dan,
I would have thought 999 was rather short, even for HF. I rarely run HF
myself, so perhaps others will comment, but I'd have thought at least a few
K.
What forwarding protocol are you using? If it is any of the FBB Modes (B, B1
or B2) messages over your RX Size limit should be rejected. If you are
running an FBB protocol, could you send by your LOG_BBS so I can see what is
going on.
You can pull your sysop or personal mail from the BBS using a normal email
client like Outlook or Thunderbird.

I am getting a lot of messages being held for being too long.
I have incoming and outgoing set as 999 and really since I am doing HF
forwarding I don't want to enable massive messages.
What does everyone generally set the max message length to?
Is there a way to send all of the sysop email to a log or somewhere so its
not clogging up my inbox with all of these "message held" messages? Or is
this something that everyone just kind of lives with?
