I have no strong opinion one way or another, but there are discussions
in the NTSD circles that NTSD SYSOPs should retain messages on their
systems for more than 30 days, for NTSD performance monitoring and
diagnostics. This would be one reason to retain the intended use for the
"D" when someone downloads a message for delivery. It would allow sysops
to retain the messages long enough to troubleshoot (post-mortem) and/or
monitor delivery issues throughout the system.
I too was accustomed with earlier BBS/MBOs to "K" killing a message when
picking it up for delivery. But it seems an extremely small adjustment
to make use of "D" instead.
